{"id":32344,"date":"2019-04-23T10:00:26","date_gmt":"2019-04-23T17:00:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.savetheredwoods.org\/?post_type=project&#038;p=32344"},"modified":"2024-12-10T17:14:54","modified_gmt":"2024-12-11T01:14:54","slug":"redwood-genome-project","status":"publish","type":"project","link":"https:\/\/www.savetheredwoods.org\/project\/redwood-genome-project\/","title":{"rendered":"Redwood Genome Project"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"lead\">The Redwood Genome Project is a multi-year effort to sequence the coast redwood and giant sequoia genomes and lay the foundation for the development of genetic screening tools that can now be developed to aid in the conservation and management of these species.<\/p>\n<p>As the League seeks opportunities to restore coast redwood and giant sequoia forests\u2014some of which have been damaged by decades of logging\u2014we need to expand our understanding of how these species are adapting to their changing environments. What in the genetic code of the trees enables them to better withstand drought, wildfire, or climate change? How can we best achieve the resilience that genetic diversity can deliver? And, how can these lessons help guide the League\u2019s important restoration work?<\/p>\n<div class=\"col-sm-6 alignright\">\n<figure id=\"attachment_43027\" class=\"thumbnail wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"\/project\/redwood-genome-project\/infographics\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone img-responsive\" style=\"cursor: pointer;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.savetheredwoods.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/redwood-genome_infographic02-541x700.jpg\" alt=\"Redwood Forest Strength Through Genetic Diversity\" width=\"541\" height=\"700\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"caption wp-caption-text\">CLICK TO ENLARGE IMAGE<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>To answer these questions, the League in 2017 launched the\u202fRedwood Genome Project, a multi-year effort to sequence\u202fthe coast redwood and giant sequoia genomes. Researchers from the League, University of California, Davis, Johns Hopkins University, University of Connecticut, and Northern Arizona University are leading the project.<\/p>\n<p>Put simply, a genome is an organism&#8217;s complete set of genetic instructions, and is comprised of DNA, the unique chemical code that guides growth, development and health. Each genome contains all the information needed to build that organism and allow it to grow and develop.<\/p>\n<p>New technologies made mapping the complex codes faster and more cost effective.
