Photo by Keir Morse<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Meet a fascinating plant of redwood country: <strong>elk clover<\/strong>, also known as California spikenard (<em>Aralia californica<\/em>), is the only member of the <strong>ginseng<\/strong> family that is native to California.\u00a0 It\u2019s a perennial deciduous plant (meaning it sheds its leaves in the fall),\u00a0 and it has really large leaves about the size of a person\u2019s hand.<\/p>\n<p>Although it can grow up to about <strong>9 feet tall,<\/strong> its stem never becomes woody like a tree or shrub. It\u2019s the largest plant of its kind in the redwood forest. You can find it in <strong>moist, shady canyons<\/strong> and areas close to water sources. Elk clovers grow in abundance near one of our fern study sites in <a title=\"Samuel P. Taylor State Park profile\" href=\"https:\/\/exploreredwoods.savetheredwoods.org\/park\/samuel-p-taylor-state-park\">Samuel P. Taylor State Park<\/a>, under the shade of the redwoods.<\/p>\n<p>Its flowers and berries grow in a shape known as an \u201c<strong>umbel<\/strong>,\u201d with each flower growing on its own evenly spaced stalk around a central point, like the ribs of an umbrella around its handle.<\/p>\n<p>The Pomo Indians have used this plant to make a <strong>healing<\/strong> <strong>drink<\/strong>, and throughout history this plant and others in its genus have been known for their medicinal qualities.<\/p>\n<p>Next time you\u2019re out in the redwood forest, see if you can spot elk
