It happened again just a few days ago when I was speaking with <strong>Prof. David Wake of U.C. Berkeley<\/strong>. We were talking about the animals that live under the redwoods, and he told me there is a <strong>salamander in the redwood forest that BARKS<\/strong>!<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_986\" class=\"thumbnail wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.savetheredwoods.org\/blog\/do-salamanders-bark-in-the-woods\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-986\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-986 \" alt=\"California Giant Salamander. Photo by William Leonard<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The <strong>California Giant Salamander<\/strong> (<i>Dicamptodon ensatus<\/i>) is <strong>one of only two<\/strong> salamanders in the world that vocalizes. This large spotted amphibian makes its home in the coast redwood forests of primarily <strong>Mendocino, Napa, Sonoma<\/strong>, and <strong>Santa Cruz<\/strong> Counties. It is a predator that deserves respect under the giant trees: it eats insects, other salamanders, and even mice.<\/p>\n<p>Check out this <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/watch\/?v=245795136602679\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">short video<\/a><\/strong> of the amazing giant salamander barking out its views on the world.<\/p>\n<p>Prof. Wake has been able to find giant salamanders when walking through the redwood forest by simply listening for its call.
